Forgotten cottages or Homes of North Shore

This area the western portion is refered to the "Indian Trails" and is represented today by a vast undeveloped wooded area that buffers the town and the academy campus. All became a part of the Academy holdings by 1960.

From the Logansport Daily Journal page 3 dated Aug. 27, 1882:

All the preliminaries for the extension of the Logansport branch of the Vandalia railway to Lake Michigan have been satisfactorily adjusted, and upon compliiance with a few easy conditions the contact will be closed, and the work will be commenced and pushed to completion.

Readers of the Journal are familiar with the route of this line to Marmont (Maxinkuckee), and will have no difficulty in following it to South Bend and the lake...
With these advantages before them, our citizens are asked to consider one of the conditions above named, which condition is that the right of way shall be furnished free to the new line thorugh our county. The estimated cost of this right of way is from $7,000 to $10,000 and it is proposed to raise the amount by subscription. A consideraable portion of this subscription has already been secured, and a committee appointed for that purpose will make an effort to raise the remainder during the present week...

1898 - Forgotten cottages or Homes of North Shore as was found labeled on the 1898 plat map. A list of cottagers on the north shore were: E. Culver It is found that by Oct 10, 1910 E. R. Culver's name was attached to the property in 1910 and that the an article headline proclaimed: The Roost Sold - Landlord Walter of the Palmer House has bought the Roost, E. R. Culver's cottage, and will move it onto his own premises where it will be used to provided additional accomodations for his hotel business. CMA - Superintent House.

using the above data - the names were moved to a present day plat of the area – the original parcel divisions still remain today

1922 Plat map distinctly shows a structure on the first three lots of the Morris Lake front; and also the Palmer house 1922 - Mar 8 - The Chicago purchasers of the Capt. The 1924 Sanborn fire map gives information that there were 6 houses or cottages before the Palmer House and one just after it and nothing further east about the remaining 4 lots that existed.

1908 Lake View Club Hotel - There was camping facilities as well as individual cottages which could be the lots indicated on the 1908 plat map.

In an article from the Culver Alumnus of 1975 - W. O. Osborn reflected on the Culver's and the Academy. This is what he remembered of the land acquisition:

E. R. and B. B. Culver, Sr., were just like twins when it came to business. What one said, the other agreed to. They wanted me to buy the little hotel where the motel is now, and I said I would. The day of the closing, neither of them were in town, so I borrowed the money in the name of E. R. and B. B., kept the deed for security, and paid the fellow. When E. R. got back, I asked them how they thought I was going to pay for the hotel. He said he forgot and made me take interest on the money. I didn't ask him for that. Those were the days when they owned the school.

Harvard University made a survey of the Academy's needs for the next 50 years. and among the things they pointed out was the land from where the motel is now, over the high bluff to the town park. It used to be called the Lakeview ground, and now its known as the Indian Trail.

The Lake View Hotel in April 1929 was acquired by the Culver Family. Here is the announcement: ACADEMY BUYS PROPERTY The Culver Military Academy has announced that they have purchased the real estate facing Lake Maxinkuckee known as the Lake View Hotel property. This gives the academy a solid stretch from the Palmer House to the boat house. - - The News-Sentinel, Thursday, May 2, 1929

Before it could be utilized as an Academy-owned hotel, it burned on 15 November 1929.

The remaining buildings and tent frames were razed shortly thereafter. Academy trustees showed no interest in developing the tract after the hotel burnt and allowed it to return to nature and is what has been familiarly referred to as - "The Indian Trails" in the ensuing years

In 1931 the Culver Reality and Investment Company was established by Bertram and Edwin II Culver. Through this they bought up the north shore property of the lake between the Culver Town Park and the original acreage H. H. Culver had bought and the academy sat on. This was done to stop speculators from buying it up and decreasing the outside development by others on the area around the academy. All that could not be bought up at the time was the railroad right-a-way. Thus this property became part of Culver Military/Culver Educational Foundation.

Jungle Hotel

And the Jungle was torn down some time after March 18, 1935. Because of the weight of the hotel was sinking out of site because the ground it sat on was spring-fed and was marsh land in essence. The Jungle Hotel without direct access to the lake and accessible only from Academy Road, was deemed expendable and was razed.

In 1959 the Culver Inn motels were built and they officially opened in 1960. It sits partially on property of the Jungle Hotel on the lake front on Aubeenaubee Bay

The 1937 Sanborn fire map gives information that there were only 2 of 6 houses or cottages before the Palmer House that existed that year and the rest were possibly moved or tore down to accommodate the building the is labeled “Club ho” and was an annex for the Palmer House and nothing further east about the remaining 4 lots

Just around the point from the Palmer House is the Roost stone structure built into the high bank so that its roof is level the top of the bluff while its front door is only a few inches the surface of the lake

The quote from the Thomas Bigley Biographical sketch in speaking of Aaron Benedict is: He also owned considerable acreage north of the lake along Aubbenaubbee Bay, 83 acres along the lake front and 200 acres thence north. He built a home approximately a half mile from the lake and planted pine trees around it. He never lived there, but rented it to his daughter, Augusta, and husband William Warner and family. Later the house burned but the pine trees stand to this day; the site is historically known as the Pine Tree House. His land holdings were later acquired by Henry H. Culver of the Culver Military Academy.

1900 Aug 10 Frank Lamson, the popular land lord of the Palmer House, sold to South Bend parties the lot just east of the Frank R New cottage, last week. Consideration, $1,000.

1900 sep 14 Dr. Page, of Indianapolis, who has been occupying the Frank New cottage this summer returned to his home Monday.

1903 - June 18 - F. R. New, of Indianapolis, was at the lake Tuesday and while here placed a card on his cottage which reads “For Sale.”

The 1924 Sanbron Fire map shows the "forgotten cottages " on the lake front - of these we so far know that the "Roost had been one and had already been moved in 1910. The 1924 Sanborn Fire Map:

From the Indiana Historical Society "We Do History" Site; it is found that in 1927 the Culver Military Academy had hired the Albertype Company do a series of post cards for them of the campus and cadet activietes. On Feb 15 1933 and article proclaimed "Club House Being Moved To Lake Edge" and it was noted that In order to make room for the new Annex the two frame cottages next to the Inn are being torn down and the area will be cleared away by the end of this week and a basement built

But the 1937 Sanborn map also indicates the first to houses are missing; and that the last 2 houses were possible accounted for when the Culver Inn Motels were built

1959 Dec 16 - Academy's North Lodge Being Razed; Home Sold and Moved

North Lodge has been sold to Gerald Lyons, a member of the Academy's custodial staff. He will raze the buliding and salvafe all useable items.

The The Frank Walaitis residence, faculty home nearest the Culver Inn's new facility, has been sold. It will be moved by the new owners to a location on the south side of town...

The Smith home will be torn down for salvage...

1960 - May 11 - House Movers Rough on Highways This old house, in the process of being moved seveal miles these past several weeks from an Academy location to a new site of West Shore Drive (Old Road 17) near the House of Treasures, is doing a pretty thorough job at beating up the highways en route. Citizens are rightly asking: "Who is responsible for making the necessary repairs?" It was moved to 819 West Shore Drive.
