was the proprietor of an art glass and prisms business, located first at 15½ N. Pennsylvania Street and ultimately in the Lemcke Building on the northeast corner of E. Market and N. Pennsylvania Streets.

    Edward Schurmann Succumbs Suddenly of Heart Disease at Home.

    Edward Schurmann, 74 years old, dealer in art glass and prisms, died suddenly at his home, 3637 North Delaware street, shortly after noon yesterday.

    Death was attributed to heart disease.

    He was widely known in Indianapolis business life and had extensive property holdings in this city. He was a member of a pioneer Indianapolis ands his father, a native of Austria, one of the earliest coal mine operators in this part of the country.

    Born in Indianapolis.

    Mr. Schurmann was born in Indianapolis in 1856, in the residence at the corner of New York and Meridian streets which later became known as the Fletcher home.

    He attended Indianapolis private schools and Harvard university. From Harvard he went to Heidelberg university, in Germany, where he was an honor student.

    In Europe, likewise, he became active in athletics and was stroke oar of the Royal Boat Club shell in Vienna. He traveled over Europe for nine years, studying and learning the languages of many of the countries he visited. He was a correspondent for New York and Chipapers, writing of his travels cago and experiences. He was known all his life as a scholar and linguist. Starts in Business.

    When he returned to Indianapolis he established the art glass and prism business which he maintained until his death. Its offices are in the Lemcke building and have been there many years.

    He was a prominent member of the Masonic order for many years and a life member of the Shrine. He was a life member of the B. P. O. E. and a member of the "Old Guard" of Indianapolis Elks lodge No. 13.

    Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Lida Heaton Schumann; a son, Edward Schurmann Jr., who is a student in the Indiana a sister, Miss Emma Schurmann of Dresden, Germany, Henry Schurmann, of Indianapolis.

    Funeral services, conducted by Oriental lodge No. 500, F. and A. M., will be held Saturday at the home.

    Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery. -- Indianapolis Star Jul 3, 1930
