History of Terre Haute, Vigo Co., IN - 1880 - businesses
ESPENHAIN & ALBRECHT, dealers in dry-goods, Terre Haute, who are proprietors of the
extensive dry-goods and carpet establishment of Nos. 23-5 South Fourth street, have
now been connected with this branch of the industries of Terre Haute since 1867.
Their establishment is 38 feet front by 65 feet deep, two floors and basement,
which space is stocked with everything pertaining to the dry-goods, notion
and carpet trade. They have many advantages over other houses of Terre Haute, not
the least of which are their facilities for selling goods at prices ranging
below their competitors, as is evidenced every day by the throng of customers to
be found at their store. This advantage of low selling is brought about by
low buying, Mr. ESPENHAIN, the senior member of the firm, having, in addition to
his interest in their business at this city, two other large establishments of
a similar nature, which are located at Belleville, Illinois, and Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. The enormous amount of goods required to run these three
establishments can be bought much cheaper than the same goods in smaller
quantities.
Mr. ALBRECHT, the junior member of the firm, and the one always to be found at
the Fourth street store, is a native of Belleville, Illinois, and is a man now
of about thirty years of age. In the active management of the large establishment
over which he presides he is thorough, and wide-awake to all questions of detail
as well as to the more important questions of financiering. They employ from
seventeen to twenty clerks, and are fast becoming the most popular house in the
city of their line. Mr. ALBRECHT has been entirely dependent upon his own resources,
and whatever he may have accomplished in financial matters is due to his
own energy and enterprise
OPERA HOUSE BURNED. Terre Haute, Ind., July 22. -- Naylor's opera house, built at a
cost of $300,000 about 30 years ago, was completely destroyed by fire Tuesday night,
and with it almost the entire block. The opera house was occupied by ESPENHEIM &
ALBRECHT'S dry goods house. The building is completely destroyed, and the CIncinnati
house, recently built at a cost of $50,000, and two buildings adjoining the opera
house are also destroyed. The loss will reach $400,000. - Logansport Reporter Indiana
1896-07-22
Sheldon Swope built a three-story downtown store for Albrecht Dry Goods Co. in 1893.
- Wabash Valley Profiles. the Albrecht Building was built during the Romanesque Revival
On December 19th, 1898 the retail side of the business was the starting point of the
worst fire ever seen in Terre Haute. It cost four people their lives, seriously injured
eight others and caused $2 million worth of damage.
In 1898, the Havens and Geddes building was less than five years old and considered
"modern and safe." Around half of the store's 300 employees had already left for home
and shortly before 6 p.m. on the evening of December 19th, 1893, an incandescent lamp
burst in a main-floor display window, showering sparks onto piles of cotton used to
simulate snow....
As well as the loss of life, the economic impact of the fire was huge...
Albrecht and company, a dry goods store, $750,000.... AUSTERLIN, WALSH and SHAY
were badly injured in the falling of the floor in the Albrecht Building, and are now
in the City Hospital
...More than half of the block on the north side of Wabash Avenue between Fifth and Sixth
streets and the Thorman & Schloss building at the northwest corner of the intersection
were destroyed by the fire. The facia of the Albrecht Building, now Ellis Plaza, survived,
but the rest of the building had to be rebuilt
May 16, 2009 - Demolition is a threat” to the Albrecht building at 518 Wabash Ave., said Todd
Nation, another downtown property owner and memberof the Terre Haute City Council. The historic
building was damaged by fire and has been vacant for two years, he said.
