North Shore Road Changes
The North Shore Road along Aubbeenaubee Bay has changed many times over the years.
David Burns said that on a good cold frosty morning you could see the the route of the original road bed out on the
Culver Military Academy parade field just off the Aubbeenaubee Bay. Whether this hold true today is not known but
I do know that it was visible in the late 1970's and early 1980's or was it because of the suggestion planted in ones
mind that "one could see it" and ones brain imagined it to be there in a 'frosty path' across the parade field
Below are some of the map sections over the years that depict the changes.

The New Academy Road
Work began Monday on the academy road beginning at the top of Bunker hill and extending 550
feet to a point north of the horse barn. The work is being done by the county at an estimated
cost of about $14,000, the money to come out of the repair fund in the county treasury. The
county is using its own roller, scarifier and truck. The road will be 16 feet wide, and will
have a foundation of crushed rock on which gravel will be placed, with a surface of ashphalt
and broken rock thoroughly mixed and pot on hot. The section between
Bunker hill and the
mess hall will be finished by the opening of the Summer school if all goes well.

...The course takes a southeasterly direction from Chicago and hits Indiana road No. 50 between Culver
and the west Indiana Boundary It follows road 50 to Culver.
From Culver to Rochester, the route was not been definitely decided. There are two possiblities - going
through Argos or foing directly south from here to Rochester. That part of the route, according to Mr.
Stone, will depend upon the settlement which is reached with the Academy concerning the road which goes
around the lake past the Academy and on to Argos...
1926 - May 5 - Scott Street and Toner Avenue were made into one and the name was made Lake Shore Drive.
1926 - Oct 6 - ...State Road 50 Number is Changed to 10...
Protect Driving Public
Another road imporvement has been annouced by Mr. Brown of the State Highway Commission. The commission has
agreed to put white post alongthe roadway between the town and acaem at the palce neat the railraod where
there is a large ditch on the side of the road. The white posts will extend from the rairaod east to Mrs.
Bogardus' property and from the railroad east to the Junge Hotel property on the east side of the road....
State Road 50 now State Road 10
Because of a desire on the part of the State Highway Commission to so number state roads that they would not
conflict with the Nationa Road numbers, the stat road numbering system has been changed. All state roads running
north and south are given odd numbers while state roads running east and west are given even numbers. Accordingly,
the road passing through Culver and formeryl known as Road No. 50 is now changed to Road No. 10. The signs along
the roadways of Indiana have bee changed with the past three weeks. The change will br rather confusing for the
motoring public for awhile.

Allows School to Give Sixty Foot Right of Way to
State For Highway
Tranactions have been completed where by the Culver as bought all the land from the Crum property to the
Mattox farm. This trip is along Road 10 and consists of 180 acres. The total expenditure was $27,355
The need for the propety arose over the promise of the acasemy to give the state a sixty foot right of way for
the improvement of Road 10. To avoid any infringement on the property owners along this stretch, the school a
uthorities pruchased the enetire tract from the various holders and then turned over the promised footage to the '
state. This strip given is almost two miles long.
Yhis section of ROad 10 is to be paved in the near future it is stated, which will be a great relief to those who
ave attempted to drive over this stretch of chuck holes an boulders.
The revised road starts with a slight curve i the place of the double sharp corner and then keeeps going straight
past the arsenal.

1927 - Jul 6 - $350,000 Expansion For C.M.A.
Made Possible By Re-Directing Road
To Erect Building
Academy to Hard Surface New Road
Which Will Extend from Artillery Barn to Road 10
As a result of the County Commissioners authorizing the changing of the road leading through the
academy’s parade grounds, a $350,000 extension program has been announced by the officials of the
Culver Military Academy.
The sanction of the commissioner’s was given Tuesday, and provides for a new road starting from the
present turn at the artillery barn and makes the road straight from that point until it curves to meet
Road 10.
The new road will be cut through the high bank at the artillery barn in such a way that
the grade down to the level of the parde ground will be much less that on the present hill by the lake
with the S turn. Good visibility will be provided at all points. [NOTE photo show this improved road

 |
The academy has agreed to give a forty foot right of way along the approved route and has further agreed
to hard surface an eighteen foot road in any manner the county engineer orders.
In order that the public will not be shut off from the stretch of lake along the present road the academy has
agreed to leave open a forty foot stretch down to the lake front which will be open to the public at all
times.
Work on this new road will start just as soon as the grade has been established for the improvement of
Road 10, which is expected to be within the next month or so. It is hoping to have the roads completed
by fall, if not sooner.
The changing of this road so as to give the Culver Military academy entire use of the eastern part of
their grounds an extensive improvement program has been announced. While all plans are still tentative,
it is expected that an expenditure of $35,000 will be made so as to provide for an enlargement of the
summer school, and a improvement in the facilities of winter school.
The first moves will be to cover over the open ditch and sod down the present roadway.
This fall the woodcraft camp will be moved over to the lake front of the released area with
accompanying improvements. This alone will call for a large expenditure of money as all work will be
permanent and complete. It is probable that the new area will be built to take care of an enrollments
of 800 in the Woodcraft school. The present number is about 425.
It is also probable that a new building for academic purposes will be built on the present woodcraft site.
This will probably be constructed within the next two Year as, it is stated, and will provide much needed
expansion for the winter school while these improvements are all that will launched at this time
the opening of this area will allow the academy to plan other improvements and expansions as conditions
warrant, which will be of much value to the future of this community

1929 - May 8 Work Continues on Raod About Academy
>
Building New Road
Unbroken Ground and Shrubbery to Beautify Terrain At School
A great deal of work has been going on around the Culver Military Academy with a view of extending the
grounds, without a road or break of any kind, as far as state road 10 and the county road east of the
Polo Field.
When it is completed the solid stretch of gree grass will make a very striking appearance.
Service roads are being formed around the northern and easter ends of the campus in such a way that they will
not mar the effect of th the shrubbert or grass.
The only gate into the school at this part will be at the jucntion of the Hibbard ROad and state road 10.
Once inside the gate the road will separate into three branches
One of these will go to the southwest and join with the hospital road which will eventyally lead arounf to the
Sally Port.
A miffle branch will go straught south and around the front of the RIding Hall to meet up with the road that
enters the building at the east end. It will be used by the spectators at the Varsity games held in
front of the Riding Hall.
The third branch will go to the east tying in with the service area around the Arsenal and thence by easy curves
to a service road which will estend to and parallel the county road on the east to the lake, where it will tyrn back
along the lake shore and finally reach the Woodcraft messhall and the piers.
Around the Arsenal and the Ridhing Hall and between the roads, bushes, shrubbery and grass will be planted in order
to do away with barren views, thus brightening up thecampus and giving it a striking appearance of neatness and beauty
to any visitor

last winter. The plans provide for a section of Route 10 beginning at Osborn corner located west of town
and extending to the east near the Rutland road will be relocated with the new road to be constructed
approcimately one-half miles north of its present location at the intersection of Route 10 and 17. Route 117
which runs along the East shore of the lake would be extended north from its present intersection near the

Proposed Relocation Of State
Road 10 - 1968
The Route section to be considered commences at a pointon existing SR 10, about 0.2 mile west of its
west junction with SR 17, and proceeds eastward for the first 0.5 mile along existing alignment. The
proposal then veers to a north-easterly direction, prior to reaching the north-south Tamarack
Road, and follows this course to a point about 0.5 mile north of existing SR 10 and 0.25 mile east of the east
junction with SR 17. From the latter location the proposed highway bends to an easterly direction
and runs more or less parallel to the present route, partially following the alignment of
east-west County Road No. 16c.
About 0.3 mile east of the Pennsylvania Railroad the proposed
project curves to the southeast and rejoins the existing roadway, before terminating at a point 0.27
mile west of Marshall County's north-south Pear Road, approximately 2.0 miles east of Culver. |
