Wrote History Of Union Township
Word has just been received of the death of Edward R. Corwin. former prominent Culver resident. on Oct.
23. at his home at Beacon, N. Y.
Mr. Corwin was the author of a notable book which recorded highly interesting historical facts about
Culver, Union Township, and Marshall County.
His painstaking study and research on that monumental work. *One Township's Yesterdays," was done as a
Civil Works Administration project during the depression year of 1934. When the Government withdrew its
support in the last stages of the editorial project.
Mr. Corwin in true American style completed the manuscript at his personal expense.
Friend Of President Roosevelt
Born Sept. 26, 1890, in Dutchess County, N. Y., he grew up not far from the home of the Franklin D. Roosevelt
family with whom he was well acquainted.
Partially disabled in service during World War I. Mr. Corwin was formerly a reporter for The Evening Enterprise
and The Democrat newspapers at Poughkeepsie, N. Y.

From 1920 to 1924 and later in 1929 and 1930 he was associated with Culver Military Academy as an instructor in
the Woodcraft School, previous to which he had been very active as a Boy Scout executive. Mr. Corwin was a charter
member of the American Legion Post at Beacon, N. Y.. and was at one time associated with the Rockefeller Foundation
in clinical work.
He was the father of two children, but information concerning survivors is not available to The Citizen.-

Mrs. Dora Baildon Corwin, of 31 North Ave., Beacon, widow of Edwin R. Corwin, died Tuesday night (Feb. 26, 1963) in
Highland Hospital. She had been a patient there two weeks.
Her husband, who died in 1959, was formerly city historian.
Mrs. Corwin was born March 13, 1893, at Walden, daughter of John and Margaret Morrisey Baildon. She had resided in B
eacon 28 years.
Surviving are a son, Arnold E. Corwin of Brooklyn; a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Cope of Castro Valley, Calif; a sister, Mrs. Bertha
B. Lloyd of Lockport, NY; two grandchildren, Dale and Dean Cope.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hignell Funeral Home, 10 Willow St., Beacon. Interment will be in Fishkill
Rural Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday afternoon and evening.
