David Braden

One of Indianapolis' foremost clothier, David Braden, Class of 1896, opened a mens' clothing store in the Tailor Shop in 1927 named the Toggery Shop. He fitted cadets with fine clothing including shoes by Churchs' of England, hats by Stetson, suits, tuxedos, and provided "specialized tailoring for the growing boy." In 1932, he move into the Maxinkuckee Inn. The Great Depression brought an end to this ventur

In 1927 while still under the name Palmer House David Braden, who was manager of the Academy tailor shop, was allowed to open a private business within the tailor shop this was called - "The Toggery Shop', and was located on the first floor.

Braden, a member of the Class of 1896; being a master merchandiser he specialized high-end clothing and accessories. He was also a member of the 158th Regiment Indiana Volunteers Company A he was a Sergeant Major enrolling on April 26, 1898 and was mustered out on Nov. 4, 1898.

After the Culver s attained the Palmer House, Braden remained in the building when it became the Maxinkuckee Inn re-naming the shop - " The Tavern Shop" and remained in business till the early 1930's. His policy of liberal credit to the cadets and sending the bills home to dad began to cause trouble for the Palmer House. and the Culvers ended his operation and the Shack moved into this area.

1928 - Oct. 31 The street leading from the top of Bunker Hill to the Academy was blocked for a couple of days last week while Forrest Shaw moved his new house from the Braden property to his lot on College Avenue

D. C. Braden Former Resident Subject of Feature Article
"If David C, Vradeb;s vuews ib nake clothing were universal throughout Indianapolis this city would be a tailor's Mecca"m Columnist Carl Henn says in a feature column titled Hoosier Profile in a recent issue of the Indianapolis Times

Mr. Braden, oldest living graduate of the Culver Militaty Academy, formerly managed the CMA Tailor shop anf is former resident of the Lake Maxinkuckee vicinity .

In the presonality sketch wroter Henn points out that "Culver remains one of Mr. Bardens {Bradens} main interests".

Now retired after operating tailoring establishments at Culver and Indianapolis, Mr. Braden, "is an impacable foe of the extreme suit drape, the tieless shirt collar, the careless attire of so many men today".

"In his (Mr. Braden's opinion, the sloppiness of young moderns directly influences their actions, 'I believe tha juvenile delinquncy today is partly due to the way young fellows are dressing. When they dress tough, they act a little bit tough. When they act a little bit tough, then they're going to act a little bit tougher. Not only that but when they grow older they keep the same clothing habits', Mr. Braden said.

"I sold my business interest in Indianapolis and established a tailoring shop at Culver in 1921. He remained there until his retirement in 1935.

Todaym erect and natty at 74m Mr. Braden is the best proof of his views on men's clothing. He and his wife, the former Mettie Raitz of Toledo, Ohio, live at the Columbia Club. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Novemeber. A son, Frederick R.. Braden lives in Kalamazoo - Mar. 28 1951 Citizen
