1911 - Dec 14 - John P Walter of the Palmer Houws was called last week to Louisville, Ky., by the critical illness of his father, whose condition is regarded as hopless. He was accompanied by Mrs. Walter and Helen. Mr. Walter returned a few days later, his father having temporarily rallied, butis holdin himself in readiness to be recalled at any moment.

Former owner of the Palmer House dies:

Culver , Ind., Mar. 18. -- Funeral services for John P. Walter, who died Tuesday night in an Indianapolis hospital, will be held Friday morning at St. Ann's Catholic church in Monterey with burial in Culver Masonic cemetery.

Mr. Walter who came to Culver from Chicago thirty years ago, was well known in business circles in northern Indiana as a hotel man and banker. For many years he owned and operated the Palmer House at Lake Maxinkuckee and more recently was interested in the Hotel Jefferson in South Bend. He was one of the original directors of the State Exchange Bank of Culver and was vice-president from 1918 to 1933. Failing health forced him to retire from business four years ago.

Surviving are the widow and one daughter.

    Mrs. Matilda Elizabeth Walter,age 89, of 6 North Terrace. Culver Alilitarv Academy, died Friday morning, May 19 at at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital at IDyer, Ind., afier an extended illness. Mrs. Walter was born at Chicago, 111. May 25, 1871 and. came to Culver in 1909 where husband, John P. Walter owned and operated The PalmerHouse (now known as The Culver Inn on Lake Maxinkuckee for many years. He preceded her in death in 1937. Surviving Mrs. Waiter are daughter. Mrs. Helen Shank, Culver: five sisters: Mrs. J. L. Arimairr, Mrs. E. C. Herleld, Miss Rose Tempel, Miss Betty Tempel, and Mrs. J. A. Kropcerk. all of CHicago and two granddaughters

    She was a member if the St, Mary's of the Lake Catholic church where solemn high mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday with Rev. Joseph A. Lenk. pastor, officiating. Burial was at the Culver cetemtery. The Easterday Funera1 Home was in charge of arragements.- Citizen 24 May 1961
