Rebecca Williams
Albert B. Wickizer, native and long a resident of Argos, passed away Wednesday evening, June 27, in
the Epworth hospital in South Bend, following an illness of about a year. His death seemingly was
caused by a malignant affliction of the stomach and for several months he had been a great sufferer.
He was 64 years old, having been born May 01, 1864, on or near the site of the present Bungalow Hotel,
in Argos, son of James M. and Rebecca Williams Wickizer.
He grew to manhood in and near Argos and united in marriage with Clista Yearick.
For several years they continued the occupation of farming three miles southeast of Argos, then moved
into town where for a number of years Albert was in the furniture and undertaking business. Disposing of
these interests, he became interested in the real estate business with the Bondurant brothers, the family
moving to Plymouth, then some years later to South Bend.
Just seven years ago he suffered the loss. of his companion.
About three years ago he again united in marriage with Mrs. Edith Hoffman, who survives him.
The three children, who survive, are Mrs. Eva Cressner of Gary, Mrs. Fae Feaser and Claude E. Wickizer of
South Bend. There are also three brothers and a sister: Mrs. Manta Brewer Pasadena, Calif., Corbin Wright of
Denver, Frank F. of San Bernardino, Calif., and Elmer Otis of So. Pasadena, Calif.
Albert was a rare, genial spirit, being endowed. by nature with a splendid physique and magnetic personality.
He was deeply devoted to his family, to his native town, and former home and to his many dear friends of former
years.
His passing is mourned by all.
The past few years he had lived in a little cabin home about seven miles west of South Bend, with rustic settings
and beautiful views. He was greatly attached to this beauty spot, where services were held Saturday afternoon, with
Father White of South Bend in charge of the Episeopalian service, and interment was made in the cemetery out
Portage avenue. - Argos Reflector Jul 5, 1928

There were only three salesmen at the time. He opened an office above the State Bank Building.
He and Albert B. Wickizer went into partnership called the Albert Wickizer BonDurant Company.
One of the first deals they made was the sale of 160 acre farm which sold for $8,000. The commission
was paid in $20 gold pieces.
Another transaction was the purchase of the Mark L. Smith land adjoining Argos. They plotted an addition
known as the Marquells Place; named after the former owner, Mark L. Smith.
It was in these early years that the abstract business was started; they employed Miss Ida Klinger
to head the company.
Mr. Wickizer moved to South Bend and the partnership was dissolved.
He made a lot of loans representing the LaPorte Savings Bank.
From 1920 to 1927 he acted as Trustee for the Julia E. Work Training School. The largest number
of children at any time was 212.
During those years, many other transactions were made, too numerous to mention.
In 1917 and 1918 during World War I, he acted as chairman of the County for the Liberty Loan Drive. During those
two years, between two and three million dollars worth of bonds were sold - going way over the top both years.
One of his last sales was that of the Democrat Paper to the Pilot Company.
In the fall of 1931, he founded the Abstract Company of St. Joseph County, South Bend. At the time of his death on
September 2, 1951, there were 35 empoyed there.
