Academy Road AKA Indiana Avenue
1922 - Indiana Avenue - only section on Academy grounds shows being named |
 |
Only ran east until the very late 1950's into the academy until it was opened up
to the west to intersect with School Street. - Was to be either Culver Rd. or
Houghton Avenue.
Proposed Change - Academy Road - 1915
1915 - April 1 - Another Road Campaign
The application of the academy authorities for a change in road lines which will
eliminate the highway past the stables and along the lake shore, has stirred up
the farmers on the east side of the lake.
Several meetings have been held a the Maxinkuckee store for the purpose of
formulating an organized opposition to the proposed change.
The change desired by the academy will open a new highway from the top of the Culver
Hill to the vicinty of the Shaw School house, thence in a southwesterly direction to
the Burr Oak Road, as we are told.
The farmers contend that besides the greater distance of the proposed route, the public
will be debarred from access to the lake.
April 8, 1915 - The Straight of it
Facts Set Forth in the Marrer of the Proposed Change of Academy Road
The information presented in our issue of last week concerning the change in the
road around the academy, we have learned, was very misleading. We desire to
correct our statements of last wee and give our readers the facts.
The road running past the mess hall is not changed.
The change begins about 300 feet south of the corner at the power house and runs
in a curve to just back of gun shed and the present stables, running due east
across the road going to Hibbard and about 150 feet south of the road to Mattix's;
the chanfe at its greates distance being only 300 feet back of the present road
and does not run any where near the Shaw school house.
After curving arounde the grove east of the raod to Hibbard in th another long easy
curve for about 700 feet, the proposed road will run straight in a south-easterly
direction to the foot of the hill where it will join the present road.
The proposed road is only 14 rods longer than the present one and instead of three
sharp square turns it has only two long and east curves.
The grades as laid out by the county surveyor are easier than those on the present
road, so the new road will be an improvement in every way.
The acadmey has developed, during the past years, a comprehensive plan for the
enlargement of the school grounds, which will almost double the size of the
parade field.
At present the field is too small to execute the proper evolutions for military
movements and an enlargement is considered essential. The plane is to make the
present field twice as long so that the running track will be onr-half mile instead of
one-quarter as it inow is.
At the end of the exctended parade field the plan of enlargement calls for a mammoth
riding hall almost double the size of the present one, and a large well-equipped
armory.
The proposed new road will pass near these new buildings and on to the east side road.
The school expects to erect a fine fireproof stable, modern in every respect, as a home
for the celebrated Black Horse Troop.
The road will have suitable drainage and will be built by uo-to-date methods with a firm
solid gravel carriage way, according to the plans and specifications of the county surveyor.
A map of the road and the proposed changes on the academy grounds is at Porter's resturant,
and is well worth examination by all persons interested. br>

Some Plain Truths

The New Academy Road -
Work begean Monday on the academy road beginning at the top of
Bunker hill
and extending 5500 feet to a point north of the horse barn
The work is being done by the county at an estimated cost of about $14,000; the money
to come out of the repair fund in the county treasury.
The county is using its own roller, scarifier and truck
The road will be 16 feet wide, and will have a foundation of crushed rock on which gravel
will be placed with surface of asphalt and broken rock thoroughly mixed and put on hot.
The section between Bunker Hill and the mess hall will be finished by the opening of
the Summer school if all goes will - June 11 1919 |
1919 - June 22 - Extend Water Main - Work on the extension of the water main from
College Avenue to the Academy Road via Baker street was initiated this week. The
extension will provide water service for the new dwelling along the Academy Road.
1924 - Apr 23 - Railroad to Install New Crossing Signal - The crossing signal which
is located on the Academy road will be changed in the newer future according to word
which Agent W. T. Parish has received from headquarters. The new signal will consist of
two lights which will light alternately, giving the appearance of a swinging arm at
night. Thr improvement will be welcomed by local people since the old signal could not
always be relied upon inasmuch as it was allowed to burn at sometimes when there were
no trains in sight.
1924 - Nov. 12 - Academy Road gets A General Overhauling
The Academy Road, begining where the pavement stops on Bunker Hill and continuing
around the Academy, is receiving a general ovoerhauling this week. A new coat of
crushed rock is being placed and a coat of asphalt will be administered. Other
minor repairs will be made.
1936 - Corwin's Yesterdays from Florence Morris: "Nearly every one calls that
street 'Faculty Row', but the recorded name of the street on the plat is Indiana
Avenue.
By the 1948 plat map College Avenue went straight through from School Street to
Lake Shore Dr. (St. Rd. 17) and Academy Drive only existed east of Lake Shore
Drive (AKA State Road 17).
The expansion of Academy Drive on the East side of ST. Rd. 17/Lakeshore Drive
probably began as early as - or earlier than 1947 - this is found in the Culver
Citizen; One account of expansion and moving of houses is:
1947 - December 3 – Work has started on moving houses at C. M. A. for
expansion program.
Some of the lakefront houses on the Academy campus was moved up along Academy Drive
then Indiana Avenue and in the subdivision on the east side of Lakeshore Drive which
was Dillon property and acquired by the academy from the family at an unknown date.
1950 - Jan 11 - Lions Place Order for First Fifty Street Markers... It has been definitely
decided that what was known as Indiana Avenue will be named Academy Road...
The July 1952 Indiana Bell Telephone Directory - Academy Drive was still under its old
name "Indiana Avenue"; as the peoples addresses were still as such in it. But the Citizen
was using the name "Academy Road as early as Mar, 28, 1951 when the A. L. Donnelly's would
start construction of their new home at 920 E Academ yRd.
1951 - Jul 25 - Final plans for the Sewage plant was being finalized mentioned was the
Culver Military Academy, North Terrace and the Maxinkuckee Inn... the Academy will build
a main sewer to connect at the railroad.
1959 - Oct 21 - Highway Detour Through Town - Entrance to town at the north city limits
on Rt 17 near Academy Road was impossible today because of street repairs and excavation.
Motorists who didn't believe the detour sign at 10 and 17 had to use the bumpy and dusty
new street through the
new residential
addition.
1962 - New Flasher light has been Installed at the intersection of North
Shore Drive and Academy Road. The light is set so the Lake Shore Drive traffic faces
a caution signal and the traffic on Academy Road faces a complete stop signal. The
light was needed at this location as it is a hazardous intersection
I am almost sure that North Shore Drive and N. Shore Ln. are one in same - why I
have inserted a photo - and as it seems an unlikely place for a flashing
signal light N Shore intersects as a "T-road" with Academy Dr. in the Eppley
Auditorium area. Tho another description is found - indicating it is actually
"East Academy Drive"
1951 - Oct 3 - Announces Plans for Numbering System to Identify Lake Homes... The
North Shore drive starts at the intersection of Indiana Avenue or Academy Road and
State Road 17 continuing across the Railroad, past Logansport gate around the
Academy to the intersection of State Road 10 and 117. Note: St Rd 17 is now N. Lakeshore
Dr.
