Main Street
1909 - Jun 24 - The Town Board
The only businees before the board Monday related to the
Ferrier addition.
The telephone poles were ordered removed from the east sisde of Main
street beginning at Mill street to the south side of the addition and
to be placed in the alleys.
Walks were ordered on the east side of Main street south of Mill street
to the north side of the same addition.
1913 - Apr 17 - Declare For Paved Street
The town board on Monday night passed a resolution ordering the paving of Main and Scott
Streets in case the gravel road election in the township is favorable.
It is proposed to make
Main Street from Ferrier's addition to the Evangelical church 26 feet wide;
from the Evangelical church to the hardware store 28 feet wide;
the two blocks in the business section 45 feet wide, with 10 foot sidewalks;
Main and Scott streets to the Bradley hotel 28 feet wide;
thence to the east line of the saloon opposite the deport 30 feet wide;
and the remainder of the distance to the top of bunker hill 28 feet wide ...
1913 - Jul 17 - Progress in the Curbing
The curbing has been extended South on Main street nearly to the Evangelical church and the
work will progress as fast as circumstances will permit.
The street in the business district is 46 feet wide, leaving 10 feet on each side for the walks.
We haven't any doubt that nearly everybody will approve of this, and are some who would have been
pleased with 12-foot walks.
The future will prove the wisdom of making the walks in that portion of the town as wide as possible.
The roadway is but little used in comparison with the walks, and for convenience and comfort
pedestrians should have ample room.
1914 - Jul 16 - The town is putting down a 12-inch drain on Main street between the
hardware store and the bank. This will take care of the property in that block and
also the property on North Jefferson
1914 - Sep 24 - Progress of the Paving.
Work on the paving of Main street is moving along nicely and without a bitch.
The sand is bauled in as fast as needed, the levelers run their hand-drags over
it, and the two bricklayers follow apidly. Seven or eight men are kept on the jump
carryiug the bricks from the roadside and placing them within reach of the pavers.
Working with both banda these men each lay three rows of bricks, one following the
other back and forth acroes the street.
The bricks weigh from 9 to 10 pounds each, and each man who unloads from the wagons
or carries them to the pavers baa a clamp that holds five bricks - not a light load
to handle all day.
On Tuesday several of the men gave out on account of the heat.
The terraces in the residence section, and the sidewalks io the business section are
lined on each side witb a continuous row of bricks nearly the entire length of Main
street.
By noon Thursday it is expaoted to have the brick laid as far north as tbe Evangelical
cburch.
1920 - Dec 8 - A traffic quard of a new type has been installed in the street in front of
the Methodist Church. It is a round dome nearly flush with the street and shows a circle
of eight white lights.
1923 - Feb 25 - Cemetary Road Was Finished Last Friday
The finishing touches to the cemetery road were administed last Friday and now it
is open to the public as a finished product.
The road should be an exceptionally good one since it required for superintendents
to over see the owrk.
The road is of graded gravel and extends from the pavement on south Main street to the
south corner of the cemetery.
It is twenty feet wide.
The gravel is ten inches thick on the sides and ggraded to twelve iniches thick in the
center.
1924 - Nov. 19 - Gravel For New Road -
Cemetary Road WIll not Be Paved As HOped By Local People
Word comes from John Newman who met with the county commissioners last week, that the
cemetary road south of Culver, will not be paved as was hoped by the people of Culver, but will
be surfaced with gravel. Cyrtailment of road funds by county council is given as the reason by the
county commissioners.
The road is now in readiness for the gravel. Some little time was spen in grading the road and in
getting is in form. It was ledt in that condition until the ginal covering was decided upon. It is
expected that the gravel will be put on at an early date, in fact the commissioners were of the
opinion that it was already being put on.
While the road should have been paved since it is an important thoroughfare drawing travel from
three directions, the community must be satisfied with the action taken in regard to the matter.
Possible the commissioners will see fit to pave it at a future date.
1925 - Feb 25 - Cemetery Road Was Finished Last Friday - The finishing touches to the cemetary
road were administered last Friday and now it is open to the public as a finished product. The road
should be an exceptionally good one since ti required four superintendents to oversee the work.
The road is of graded graverl and extends from the pavement on South Main street to the south
corner of the cemetary. It is twenty feet wide. The gravel is ten inches thick on the sides and
graded to twellve inches think in the center.
