The following letter was sent to Supt. J. F. Patterson last Friday - J. F. Patterson,
Dear Sir Several citizens have recently moved into new homes in the old Vandalia Park and find
ourselves deluged at times with the smoke of trains passing through or standing at the station.
I would like to inquire if it would not be possible for firemen to refrain from putting on a new
fire just before reaching the station, while standing at the station, and immediately after leaving
the station?
This seems practicable in the case of the passenger trains, and in the case of the through freight
trains as well where there would be but a difference of a minute or less necessary to carry a train
out of the territory of residences and business houses.
If my suggestion is a reasonable one and you can give us relief we will feel under obligations to you
and to the men on the engines.
To this communication Supt. Patterson replied as follows :
Your suggestion is entirely prac tical and I have taken the matter up with the road foreman of engines
who will get right after the matter and see if we cannot eliminate at least part of the nuisance.
Nor {Not} only the residents of Vandalia Park but scores of other people living or doing business near the
