Former Chief Operator Here Retired With Long Service Record.
Mrs Margaret Harris, for the past eight years chief operator at the local telephone
exchane, has been retired with pay by the Indiana Bell Telephone Company.
During her period of service atr Culver Mrs. Harris also handled the commerical
affairs of the telephone company and through these contact learned to know
practically every person in the community.
On Thursday evening, September 27, a dinner was gfiven in her honor at the
Palmer HOuse.
At this time C. R. Woods, general siperintendent of traffic of the Indiana Bell,
presented Mrs. Harris with a gold service emblem in recongnition of her long and
faithful service with the company.
She first started in 1895, but a break in the service record of five years makes the
actual period of emplyment twenty-eight years.
Among those present at the dinner were: C. R. Woods, general superintendet of
traffic; J. Lloyd Wayne, spervisor of traffic; W. M. Kendrick, supervisor of employemnet;
W. F. Johnson, division traffic superintendent; A. D. Lewis, division commercial
superintendent; A. H. Guyot, district traffic commercial supintendent; and Miss Margaret
Hefferman, chief operator of SOuth Bend; Mr. and Mrs. Harris, Miss Mary Stagg,
recently appointed chief operator at Culver, and severl other Culver telephone people
Mrs Harris started her telephone career at Terre Haute in July 1895, as an operator
for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. A short time later she was made
chief operator and remained in charge of the unit fo the A. T. & T. Company's long
distant system until 1909 at which time she resigned to be married.
After a few years absence the lure of thye business became to strong and in May 1914,
she returned to the Bell Systen and was employed by the Central Untion Telephone
Company, later to be known as Indiana Bell Telephone Company. After several years of
supervisory work, during which time she visited and assisted in the various exchanges of
the telephone company, she was transferred to South Bend as chief operator of the
Lincoln office. Twp year later Mrs. Harries was transferred to Culver where she remained
until her retirement, effective Aug. 12, 1928.
From 1895 to 1928 a period of thirty-three years, Mrs Harris has Witnessed the remarkable
growth and development of the telephone. She remarked at the dinner that as sh looks
back a the rather crude way of doing things in years past it seems hardly possible that such
remarkable progress could have been made in the comparatively short time she has been
in telephone work. - 1 Oct 1928 - Citizen
