A clue has been finally given that it indeed may have actually been on the Culver Inn property - the 75
year Column of Feb 15, 1933 states: In order to improve the facilities available to visitors and guests of the
Academy, the Club House is being moved to the lakes shore along side the Maxinkuckee Inn. There the
structure will be remodeled to provide 16 rooms, all with bath and well furnished. The new building will
be placed 75 feet southwest of the inn property; in order to make room for the new Annex the TWO
FRAME cottages next to the inn are being torn down and the area will be cleared away and a basement
built. It is said not to have been to far from the Maxinkuckee Inn.
Just a thought could this later be known as the Gignilliat cottage
Then known as the Gignilliat cottage — for Culver Military Acaemy superintendent L.R. Gignilliat — and later
as the Superintendent’s Home [ the E. R. Cottage was to have been the superintendent's home unless
this cottage was used for that purpose until the E. R. Cottage was turned over to CMA, all but the first
floor of this late 19th century structure burned in a March 25, 1918 fire, though there was time to save
most of the furniture and belongings from the flames. The building was razed in 1989 to make room for the
Huffington Library of today, on the Culver Academies campus.
Most striking to me was the similarities that the two cottage have - below is the front of the
Gignilliat cottage while it
was burning March 25, 1918

BUT now an
educated guess this would be around the Culver Homestead
which sits on a high bluff of the lake. Since Arthur's wife Laura Evelyn “Eva” Thompson
was a great grand- daughter
of
William Thompson
who had a land grant for 344 96/100 acres in section 15.

Restituion Published In Cleveland
A. R UNDERWOOD HAS SOLD CHURCH OF GOD PAPER AND WILL RETIRE PROM ITS WORK.
A NEW CORPORATION
Paper Has Been Published in Plymouth Since 1874 Underwoods . Will Not Leave City.
The Restitution, the only paper of the Church of God, has been sold by A.R. Underwood to a new
corporation recently formed in Ceveland, O. The racks, cases, type, and other furniture and
fixtures of the plant have been packed and were today loaded for shipment to ihe new place in
Cleveland.
In the last issue of the Reestitution Mr. Underwood bids farewell to his many subscribers and
asks their support of the new company.
As to the new publishers he says :
"The Church of God Publishing Company ' is being formed, with headquarters at Cleveland, Ohio,
a large city, where printing facilities are the best, where office rent will be free, and where
a Brother has offered to edit the paper free for a year. This Company is not a faction of the
Church of God, but is thoroughly representative, there being stockholders in different states
and in Canada, There is still some outstanding stock, which may be obtained by any brother or
sister sound in the faith. The business management is placed tempoarilv in the hands of Brother
Buell W. Nutt, 803 E. 110th Street, Cleveland. Ohio; to whom all business communications and all
money should be sent. All manuscripts and notices should be sent to Brother R. C. Husrgins, 10623
Lee Avenue. Cleveland, Ohio.
These brethren will act until the stockholders shall select officers a to conduct the work. We are
pleased to announce that the Editorial policy of paper "will remain as it is.
Mr. and Mrs. Underwood do not intend to leave Plymouth and their many, many friends here will be
glad to learn that.
He has been offered places in Chicaso, Cleveland and also South Bend, but thev desire to stay in
Plymouth, and will do so unless Mr. Underwood does not find employment here to enable them to carry
out their desires.
The Restitution was brought here from Chicago in 1874: Mr. Underwood worked, on the paper when there
and came with it to Plymouth, and has been connected with it ever since. The following statement is
made in the Restitution about the history of the paper from the time it came to Plymouth:
"In the year 1274 there was organized in Plymouth, Ind., what was known as the "Christian Publishing
Association." It was a scheme that was put through by H.V. Reed, who was chosen to edit The Restitution,
which had been acquired from Thos. Wilson. Steck was sold, and the money used to run the business as
far as it would do so. After two years Brother Reed stepped out, and Brother Chaplin ran it for a
number of years.
The finances were in bad condition, and each year became worse, until in 1S87 it was found that the
Association owed on contract to the printer a debt of near six hundred dollars. The question of paying
this debt and continuing the paper was considered, and it was shown that no more stock could be sold,
and the old stockholders would not stand an assessment on their stock. The stock had never been
considered of commercial value, being simply subscribed to start the enterprise going, and not supposed
to pav dividends, and was not supposed to be subject to assessment. The only thing to do was to stop,
and that would not pay the debt owing. At this time proposition was made bv the printer ,A.
R. Underwood, to take the business and print the paper for what the receipts might be, and cancel the
debt due him. This being the only thing offered as a wav out. the prpnosition was accepted, and a
contract so made. A semblance of business order was gone through with each year until the last meeting
in 18G7, and though notice was given for meetings for three years after that time, no meeting has been
held, and no business done hv tbe association.
Many of the old stockholders have set in repudiating their stock, one of the last Board of Directors is
dead, and three others have turned in their stock and resigned.
By abandonment and repudiation it therefore seems that the Christian Publishing Association has ceased to
exist. - Weekly Republican Plymouth, Indiana Jul 13, 1911
