Cancel Bond Sunday Plan Canvass of Homes In "MacArthur Week"
A state-wide house-to-house canvas which will reach into rural areas and villages
as well as towns and cities will supplant Bond SUnday, the one-day Defense
Bond pledging plan scheduled for April 12, it has been announced today by the
Indiana Defense Savings Staff
Opposition to the use of Sunday as the pledging day and inability to choose
any other day because of number of workers in the precinct-pledging plan,
together with the fact that many laborers in war work could not take time
off to sign a pledge on a week day, made the change of plans necessary.
The house-to-house canvass will start Monday, April 27 and continue through
the week. The period will be known as "MacArthur Week" with the slogan "Bonds
for Bullets for MacArthur"...
However, such opposition has arisen to the use of Sunday as a pledging day we
do not feel justified in proceeding with this plan. More than anything else,
we desire the unity of Indiana people in supporting the war...
Important Notice - The object of having an occasional alert for the assembly
of the membership of the Culver Civilian Defense Corps is to accustom all
concerned to answer the call without undue excitement and alarm. This
applies to the civilian population too, naturally
The undersigned author has been informed that during the last alert, which
was sounded at night, there was considerable alarm and excitement evident
among numerous citizens...
Such a state of excitement in the minds of the public if the conditions were
actual, would definitely play into the hands of out enemies. And it would grow
in volume if once started... Only a cool, and collected person is capable of action...
When the next alert sounds - and it will be a surprise alert - it is requested
that every citizen of this community stop for a second or two and grimly
determine to keep cool and unexcited, regardless of whether the alert is
a practice one or real. Then attend to your role in the civilian defense set-up
in as calm a manner as it is possible for you to assume and maintain. If your are
not part of the Defense corps, it is requested that you merely remain indoors
if you are already there, or get off the streets in as unhurried a fashion as you
can muster, with due regard to expeditious obedience to the signal warning.
Let the initials of the Culver Civilian Defense Corps also stand for Cool, Considered,
