benefit of the U.S.O. it is recongnixed that this source will not raise enough to meet
the Union townshop quota of $600....It has been suggested that donations be limited
to $1.00 so that a larger number of people will be participating in this ...Donatoions
can be ledt at the bank or either drug store. W. S. Easterday has been appointed
treasurer of the drive
That “speedy bomber” that flew over town Monday was piloted by
Major Ralph A. Osborn Jr. on a flight from Tampa, Fl. tp Dayton, Ohio He made the
circuit over this area to give an aerial , and gave an greeting to his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph A. Osborn.
Another contingent to Indcution Center - A group of 54 young men from Marshall
count left Saturday mornign for the army induction center at Indianapolis Those

Community Responds with Bang to Drive for Keys - ...The grade and high schools
collected 56 pounds of old keys which means that the youngsters hustled to dig
up over 3,000 keys....

and “Blondie for Victory” on Oct. 14. Adult fares were 30 cents, children 10 cents.

The Marshall County Local Board has begun to review the classification of
registrants in Class II in accorance with the categoried listed below
Category I - Registrants with collateral dependents only
Category II Registrants married prior to December 8, 1941 and after they
were required to register and not in a deferred classification at the time of
marriage, such as 4F, 4A, IH and IB and without children or with children born
after Sept 8, 1942
Category III Registrants married prior to December 8, 1941 and after they were

Help Needed for War Industry Work
An appeal for men and women to work in war industries in northern Indiana has been
issued by the United States Employment Service. No skills are necessary and no
previous experience is required.
Registration of war workers will be held in the Knox town hall, Tuesday, Nov. 10
1:00 p.m. to 4:00 P.M.
This registration is voluntary, but the producation of vital materials for the armed
forces will lag unless a new and heavy flow of workers is obtained immediately
Major Imrie In Service - Major Norman A. Imrie... has been called to active service
with the army air force at Chanute Field, Ill.
Two are Promited - Eldon Curtis has been promoted to staff sergeant and Richard
Bowles has been advanced to sergeant.
Capt Graham Promoted - Captain WIlliam J. Graham... has been advanced to the
rank of major in the calvary. He is stationed at Fort RIley Kansas.

Ed Sauer Promoted - ...who is stationed at Kickman Field, Fort Worth, Texas, has been
promoted to the rank of Captain.
Cunty Falls Short of War Bond Quota
Marshall county did not reach the goal set for October war bonds and stamps sales.
In fact, it lacked $26, 572 of reaching the goal - approximately $1 for every man,
woman and child in the county.
Marshall county people purchased a total of $87,262 worth of bonds and stamps
in
October but the quota was $113,834.
The November quota has been reduced slightly to $104,348.
However that is still higher than the highest monthly sales ever reached in the
county - lat May when over $90,000 worth of bonds and stamps were
purchased, Marshall Kizer, county war bond chairman, announced.
Howard Stevens went to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. Thursday where he was
inducted in the army.

Gordon Foss...has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Mo. to a camp near
Lincoln, Nebr.
Fletcher Strang Jr.... started aviation training SUnday in the C.P.T. at Tr-State College,
Angola

No Bus Route Through Culver Possible Now
With gasoline rationing in the immediate
offing and only two trains a day on the railroad, the Chamber of COmmerce filed
a request with the Indiana Motor Bus Company to establish a motor bus route
between
Culver and Plymouth or from Plymouth to Logansport via Culver
An official of the company has replied that because of war time restrictions
on bus facilities by the Office of Defense Transportation, the impossibility
of
securing additional equipment, and the impossibility of securing additional
equipment and the impossibility of securing the necessary operating
authority, the company cannot act on the request at this time.

William Orval Burkett and Donald Clifford McDonald were amount the 15 youths from Marshall
county to be accepted last week for army service under the selective service act. William
W. Tabor was one of the 11 to be rejected.
No Outdoor Lights FOr Holidays - W.P.B.
The following information has been received from the State DIrector of Civilian
Defense concerning the curtailment of decorative Christmas street lighting...
The War Prouction Board today asked city officials, civic clubs, chamber of
commerce, merchants and citizens generically to dispense with outdoor decorative
lighting this
christmas.
WPB pointed out that Christmas lighting requires the use of critical materials,
electricity, and manpower and is not in line with general conservation programs
already under
way...
The Culver Chamber of Commerce voted on Nov. 23 to conform to above
recommendation, so no Christmas decoration contest will be held this year.
The town board announced that will not string the colored lights along the
business section this year and the officers of The State Exchange Bank state
decorations this
year will be minus any outside lights.
Local Boy Cited For Gallant Action
Technical Sergeant Michael J. Bauman Jr.... has been awarded a silver star for gallant
action against the Japanese in the Southwest Pacific....
Bauman's citation stated that he “helped a B-26 bomber into its base during an enemy
attack on the American airfield in New Guinea, Aug. 17. He discovered that flying
shrapnel from bursting explosives on the runway had set fire to the bomb bay tank. He
promptly salvaged the boms and then put out the Fire. After saving the plane from
within, he manned a rear gun to ward off Japanese pursuit planes.”

Hoosiers to Recall Pearl Harbor, Dec.7 - At the request of Gov. Henry F.
Schricker, church bells throughout Indiana will toll... but waving west for one
minute at 11:55 a.m. on Dec 7, first anniversary of the the Japanese
bombing of the United States Hawaiian Naval Base... rather than the
actual bombing time of 1:25 p.m. in order to avoid interference with the
states "around the clock" war working program... Following the tolling of bells,
Governor Schricker will lead the citizenry of the state in the oath of allegiance
to the flag over a network of Indiana radio stations... easch Hoosier sak of

student corps at Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y.... Colgate began special
work with its 182 seniors to prepare them for the military.. |
Registration Dates Set For 18--19 Year Old Group
Registration for all young men who have reached the age of 18 since July 1
will be as follows: Those born
July 1 to Aug 31 1924 inclusive, to register before the week beginning Dec 11
September 1 to October 31 19224 to register Dec. 18-24
November 1 to December 21 to register December 26-31
Young men reaching 18 after January 1 will register on their birthdays.
Selective Service headquarters has ordered distribution of questionnaires to
18 and 19 year olds registrants who will be inducted as their order numbers are
reached.
To Canvas Homes For War Material
Coordinating the driver for tin, fats, and silk and nylon hosiery with the drive
for 10% purchase of war bonds, it has been decided that during the week of
Dec. 6 to 12,
every block and neighborhood captain would canvass the homes in his territory...
Women members of the civilian defense se-up are making arrangements so that
tin cans may be deposited at stores where people do their marketing... Tasts
have and will
continue to be sold to local markets
Citizens who have not done so will be asked to pledge 10 percent of the income
for the purchase of war bonds....

High Schools Plan to Revamp Program A Aid to War Needs.
County High School principals, metting with county Superintendent Deane
Walker, have adapted the Indiana School Was program...
Local neeas will determine the exact extent of the new program... the
entire program will be based on a "power inventory" of students.. which is
a primarily a testing program, is to determine skills and aptitudes so that
students may gear their work more efficiently.
An inventory in mathematics will also be set upwith students who betray
weakness in that field required to pass a specified course before graduation.
The boys' physical fitness program, adapted to the new state progran, is
already under way in part.
...physics may be taught to the exculsion of chemistry.. the situation today
needs a knowledge of physics in preference to chemistry to supply the
increasing demand for mechanics>
The local high school has completed plans for takign a student power inventory
of all boys and girls in the junior and senior classes and physical
examinations will start this week with local doctors, and dentists in charge.
... the inventory will include intelligence, achievement and arithmetic tests. It the latter
is not passed the student will be required to take a remedial corse next semester. The
record will also showo othe student's average high school ranking and personal
qualifications will be ecaluated. Each individual report will be filed with the Indiana
Board of Public Instruction and will be available to use by the army.
...the 55 minute periods will be shortened to 45 minutes and a period of 50 minutes
added for the physical fitness program. This training must be taken by all junior and
senior boys who pass the phhysical examination. Girls will be given courses in home
nrusing, first aid and healt.

signal corps. He has been transferred to Cmabridfe, Mas..
$1,242. 50 Worth of Bonds Sold on Pearl Harbor Day = Local citizens got in some
good slaps at the Japs on Monday in observance of Pearl Harbor Day by buying
$1,242. 50 worth od war bonds and stamps. The post office somd $243.75 worth
of bonds while the STate Exchange Bank had one employee kept busy selling
$768.75 worth of bonds.

637 Tires and Tubes to Government From Culver - COmplying with the regulation that
no motorists may have over five tires and tubes for his automobile. 637 tires and tubes
have been sent to the Fort Wayne district office, according to C. L. Shively, local
express agent. The perion for turning in surplus has been exxtended to Dec. 12
accoding to SHively.
Pt. Nelson C. Cooper...has been assigned to camp at Fresno, Calif for training.
Lt. Thomas Marshall... has been stationed at Kelly Field near San Antonio Texas, for
several months had received a commission as captain and has been transferred to an
advanced flying field at Lubbock Texas.
Raymond Wiger jooined the army on Dec. and is Stationed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison

LArge Christmas wreaths have been placed on the bulevard light poles in the two
business block and festooning has been draped across the main intersection.
When CPA issued it ruling against outside Christmas lights the town board decided to
cancel its order for the decorations but the material had been shipped before the
cancellation arrived.

Called in Draft - Robert Hatten, Donald Gross and Robert Enyeart were amount the
31 young men from Marshall county to de accepted for induction into the army last week.
Under a recent government ruling, names of those rejected may not be published.
