Lt. Vonnegut 's Leap From Crippled Bomber on Europe Raide Described - ...has
been missing since a bombin mission over German territory Nov. 6... a clipping
a clipping from a British newspaper... told how six crew members, among them Lt.
Vonnegut , bailed out of their bably damaged Fortress. Just before the last three
jumped they noticed their bombardier trapped in the nose espape hatch with his
parachute fouled. The three, rather than abandon him, stayed with the bomber and
brought her safely home with only the tail guns avaialable for defense... The
crews troubles began... after the Fortress "The Last Straw" turned off its target
on the Gelsenkirchen and Musnter raid. FLak and cannon fire struck one engine,
ripped a large hole in the stabilizer, and peppered the plane full of holes. One
propeller raced out of control. The oil lines were destroyed and Lt. Butler
unable to feather the the propeller, or throw it out of operation feared it would
burn itself out and ripinto the plane. The co-pilot's order to bail out came
over the communcation system. Then he ran the bail out buzzer. Meanwhile the pilot
put the ship on automatice control. She started down in a steep glide. Three
pursuing enemy fighters abandoned the chase... the fix our bomardier was in. He was
hopelessly trapped, his right leg hanging outside the nore hatch, his parachute
streaming alongside, lines tangled in the top turrret gun door hinges... We can't
leave a man like that... The rest had already jumped as ordered. We could see them
going down alright. Their chutes all opened. It was up to us to get the Last Straw
Home.... Saturday's official "missing in action" list carred the name of Lt.
Vonnegut and his imprisoment will be confirmed as soon as the Germian listing is
received by the War Department. |
