March 5, 1944... Captain WIlliam E. Friend Jr., 0-385995, Air Corps was reported
missing in actiom 4 Mar 1943, the War Department has entertained the hope that
he survived... the conditions of warfare deny us such information. The record
concerning your son shows that the aircraft of which he was the pilot was shot
down by enemy action off Texel Island, Holland... In view of the fat that twelve
months have now expired without the receipt of evidence to support a
continued presumption of survial, the War Department must terminate such
absence by a presumtive finding of death... enslisted as an air cader July 1931
and received his commission in February 1942. Upon his arrival in England he was
promoted to captain and in February 1943, was awarded the Air Medal and the

the county organization uncovered a pre-war ruling that the Red Cross didn't
sanction participation in unified drives and wanted its onw solicitation... the
$1,331.06 raised by the booth solicitation has been sent in to the county chapter.
War Appeals officers state that the money will be available any time the Red Corss
wants it and express regret that the county chapter raised the issue so that the
intention of the township to provide funda for the Red Cross could not be fulfilled...
The general feeling also exists here that there is no reason to subscribe to a Red

imform solicitors that money for the Red Cross is available any time that organization
wants to accept it...
