September 7 –8, 2002, a fleet of 27 C-Scows and 21 MC-Scows convened on the shores of beautiful lake Maxinkuckee for their annual fall regatta.
Friday afternoon, Eric Hood put on a great off-the-water clinic originally organized for MC’s but many C sailors attended, as well. Eric did a great job of tying in useful information for both fleets. Thanks to Eric, everyone learned a lot and appreciated the useful information.
Saturday’s racing was postponed until 2:00 p.m. when the wind came up enough to send the sailors out onto the water. One race in light and fluky conditions was completed in the only opportunity that would present itself all weekend. Joe Schaub battled it out with veteran C sailor Herbie Litzbarski. Joe came out on top with Herbie finishing second as well as taking home the Masters award. Chris Craig, John Cochran and Brian Brickler rounded out the top five.
The MC fleet was not as close as the C-Scow race. Eric Hood showed everyone what a thousand of hours of sailing a year can do for one’s results. Scott Caston came in second, followed by Bob Miller, Terry Adams and Fred Hillis. Bob Miller was the top Master.
The race committee, headed by PRO Allen Becker, did a great job setting a fair course considering the difficult conditions. The entire MC class finished but the wind shut off right after most of the C-fleet had finished. The sailors were rounded up and towed in to get ready for the evening’s events.
Maxinkuckee Yacht Club’s famous Chili-Cheeseburger Party was well attended by
the sailors looking to ease the pain from the difficult day of sailing. There
was plenty of rum punch, beer and food to help the sailors forget the lack of
wind and 95 degree day. They all enjoyed sitting around a bonfire, listening to
music and socializing as a slide show of the day’s events was projected on a
C-Scow sail that hung from the trees. Special thanks to our sponsors Mount Gay
Rum, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Kokomo IN and Culver Marina.
